Freeway Corridor Structural Elements
In an effort to create regional identity and interest within the Houston District, three regional zones are identified for structural elements, each receiving a specific design scheme. Each scheme establishes a design continuity and consistency of elements that share a common aesthetic characteristic reflecting the regional character of that corridor. These schemes provide guidelines and produce the preferred aesthetic form, function and appearance of each new baseline highway element. While the different schemes each specifically reflect their corresponding regional corridor zone in their detailed appearance, all the schemes share a commonality in form and character to create a continuity and consistency on a distinct level.

The vertical scheme, applied to the northern regional corridor zone, consists of predominantly vertical articulations and tree-like forms that reflect the character of the dominant pine forested landscape. Within the US 290 Corridor Program, the vertical scheme applies to US 290 and IH 610 east of US 290.

The horizontal scheme, applied to the western regional corridor zone, consists of predominantly horizontal lines and articulations that act as a linear aesthetic reflecting the contextual character of the open grassland landscape. Within the US 290 Corridor Program, the horizontal scheme applies to IH 610 west of US 290.

The wave scheme, applied to the southern regional corridor zone, consists of curvilinear and wave-like forms that reflect the nautical character of the coastal waters. The wave scheme is shown for informational purpose only, and does not apply to the US 290 Program.

Common elements will be applied to all schemes, including landscape pavers at intersections and ramp noses.

Signage

The location, frequency, and graphics of signage in the highway corridors are unalterable due to state, federal, and safety standards. However, the following recommendations further organize the way graphics are arranged to produce a simpler and more coherent system:

  1. Sign bridge supports will be concrete columns that are consistent with the corridor theme.
  2. Multiple sign panels are aligned with each other and the same height.
  3. Sign widths may vary.
