Landscape Elements
The recommended planting concepts established for the Green Ribbon Project reinforce the primary principle of Green First. Native Naturalized plantings are preferred by TxDOT because implementation is economical, maintenance costs are significantly reduced, and the long-term visual aesthetic is outstanding. Plant materials include a mix of fast-growing indigenous tree species, mixed understory shrubs and small trees. These recommended plantings, because of their fast growth, reduce maintenance establishment periods and provide an immediate visual impact.

Based on these Green Ribbon Project principles, the US 290 Corridor Program includes three different landscape design zones: interchange, outer separation and detention pond.
