- What interim improvements can be made to improve congestion?

Although actual program construction is still several years away, the Texas Department of Transportation is committed to bringing relief to the US 290 Corridor as quickly as possible. To that extent, TxDOT is in the process of implementing a series of Traffic System Management (TSM) improvements along US 290. Details of these improvements are as follows:
TSM Improvements - First Project
- Westbound approach to Senate Ave
- Pavement widening to add left turn lane storage along frontage road
- US 290 from Little York to East of Fairbanks N. Houston
- Eastbound and Westbound mainlane pavement widening to add auxiliary lanes
- US 290 from Jones Road to West of FM 529
- Restripe existing eastbound and westbound mainlane pavement to add auxiliary lanes.
The first TSM project was let to bid in August 2009; construction on these improvements began on November 2, 2009, and is anticipated to take approximately 6 months to complete.
TSM Improvements - Second Project
- WB Frontage Road at Jones Road
- Pavement widening to add auxiliary lane along frontage road
- Construction of new entrance ramp
- Relocation of existing exit ramp
- Conversion of existing 1 lane exit ramp to a 2 lane exit ramp
- Intersections: Senate Ave, Gessner Drive, Fairbanks N Houston Road, Hollister Drive, W. 43rd Street, Antoine Drive and 34th Street
- Median modifications and pavement widening to allow left-turns from current u-turn only lanes.
- W. 43rd Street
- Median modifications
- Pavement widening for the addition of turn lane storage
- Conversion of 1 lane exit ramp to a 2 lane exit ramp
- Eastbound and Westbound Frontage Roads
- Restripe frontage roads between Jones Road and Dacoma
The second TSM project was let to bid in October 2009; construction on these improvements began in January 2010, and is anticipated to take approximately 6 months to complete. Click here to view photos of that TSM construction.
