- Is commuter rail a part of the overall US 290 Project construction plan?
-
The Major Investment Study (MIS) and traffic demand studies for this corridor indicate passenger rail in concert with managed toll lanes on Hempstead Tollway, five lanes in each direction on US 290 from IH 610 to Beltway 8 and four lanes in each direction from Beltway 8 to the proposed SH 99/Grand Parkway are all needed for the projected traffic demand. The vision for the US 290 Project is multi-modal and TxDOT has identified a 50-foot reserve for high-capacity transit on the maps. There are also accommodations within the roadway border width (area between the frontage road and right-of-way line) for bike lanes along Hempstead. The mode for the high-capacity movement will still need to be determined in coordination with other regional partners and may consist of commuter rail, bus rapid transit, light rail or some other similar type mode. However, provision has been made for both freight rail and high-capacity movements. A future environmental study will be required before the modal type is determined and implemented.
