How many lanes will be open on US 290 during construction?

During peak hours of travel, there will be the same number of through mainlanes as currently available prior to construction. They may be slightly narrower in width and there may be limited or no shoulders on either side, but the number of through mainlanes will remain the same. From time to time there will be limited night or weekend closures, as is the case with any major freeway reconstruction program.

It is important to note that the Beltway 8/US 290 interchange is not proposed to be totally reconstructed, the existing direct connectors and mainlane Beltway 8 bridge will remain which will reduce the construction impacts at this interchange.

It is also important to note the Hempstead Road and Hempstead Tollway construction between IH 610 and SH 6 will be complete prior to the beginning of construction on US 290 from W. 34th Street to the west, which will offer two alternate routes along Hempstead for those choosing to avoid the construction zones. They will only be an alternate, because US 290 will also remain functional during construction, as with every freeway construction program performed in the Houston region.
