What is the current status of rebuilding US 290/Hempstead corridor?

Based on comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) published in June 2007 and presented in Public Hearings in July 2007, a Final EIS will be prepared in Fall 2007. This will be followed by a final Record of Decision (ROD) concerning any proposed improvements from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which is anticipated in Spring 2008. We can then begin the right-of-way (ROW) acquisition process and get engineering design contracts under way. The current preliminary schedule is to begin construction by 2011 at the IH 610/US 290/Hempstead managed lanes interchange and portions of the Hempstead managed lanes between SH 6 and IH 610. At least a major portion of the managed lanes are targeted to begin operations in 2014. Click here for the map and project phases.
