Construction in Project G is now substantially complete. Both the US 290 eastbound mainlanes (left) and westbound mainlanes (right) have had Next Generation Concrete Surface work performed on them. That process reduces tire/pavement noise.

The contractor works to complete the new US 290 outbound collector-distributor roadway. (left) This new roadway will open in a temporary configuration in July 2016, and from it motorists can exit to FM 529 or stay on it until the roadway rejoins the mainlanes. Motorists drive on the new US 290 inbound collector-distributor, which opened in June 2016. A motorist uses the new US 290 inbound exit to West Little York and Gessner, which comes off the new inbound Collector Distributor ramp at Beltway 8. An outbound Collector Distributor is being built in this area as well. These new roadways will improve traffic flow at the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange by allowing exiting and entering traffic to merge without disrupting mainlane traffic.

The contractor clears space for construction of the ramp to the outbound US 290 Collector-Distributor (CD) lanes (left). That work is occurring beneath the outbound US 290 direct connector to the Sam Houston Tollway (right).
Crews recently modified a column of that direct connector to accommodate the outbound CD lanes.

Project G January 2016 Pictures

Crews work to reconfigure a column of the outbound US 290 direct connector to the northbound and southbound Sam Houston Tollway, this construction is anticipated to keep that direct connector closed until early March 2016 (left). That construction must be done to accommodate the new outbound US 290 Collector-Distributor lanes(right), which will reduce congestion at the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange by consolidating exiting and entering movements. An inbound US 290 Collector-Distributor is being constructed as well.

Project G December 2015 Pictures

Bridge beams were installed just before Senate Avenue, for the new inbound Collector-Distributor roadway. Being constructed on both sides of US 290, these roadways will improve mobility through the Beltway 8 interchange by consolidating exiting and entering movements.

New beams are in place for the outbound US 290 collector-distributor roadway. The addition of collector-distributors will improve traffic flow through the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange by consolidating exiting and entering movements.

At left, the contractor places a panel into the retaining wall for the widened inbound US 290 mainlanes just east of Senate Avenue. By this month, much of that wall had been completed.

Project G September 2015 Pictures

Work on this project is occurring in several areas. On the left, crews build the wider inbound US 290 mainlanes at FM 529. On the right, crews smooth poured concrete on the new outbound Collector-Distributor roadway. That roadway will help outbound traffic flow through the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange by consolidating exit and entrance movements.

Project G July 2015 Pictures

These images show the progress crews are making on the westbound Collector-Distributor roadway at Beltway 8. This new roadway will parallel the westbound US 290 mainlanes, and will improve traffic flow through the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange by consolidating exiting and entering movements.

Project G June 2015 Pictures

In these pictures, the contractor works to complete the inbound Collector-Distributor (C-D) roadway at Beltway 8. The C-Ds will improve traffic flow through the interchange by consolidating entering and exiting movements.

Project G May 2015 Pictures

The left image shows the new outbound US 290 frontage road at W. Little York in the foreground. In the background, crews clear space for the new westbound Collector-Distributor. That roadway will consolidate outbound US 290 merging and diverging movements, improving traffic flow through the US 290/Beltway 8 interchange. On the right, crews work to complete the new outbound US 290 frontage road near Senate Avenue.

Project G April 2015 Pictures

These images show you progress on the outbound US 290 frontage road just east of Beltway 8. The contractor has laid down asphalt, over which concrete will be poured. The frontage road in this area is temporarily reduced to one lane.

Project G March 2015 Pictures

Both of these pictures show the work being done on the new outbound US 290 frontage road near Beltway 8. Once that work is complete, motorists will be moved here. Then in the space where the frontage road used to be, construction will start on the new outbound Collector-Distributor roadway. That roadway will combine exit and entrance movements to allow better traffic flow through the interchange.

Project G January 2015 Pictures

Crews have made much progress on the inbound US 290 Collector-Distributor ramp at Beltway 8. At left you can see it rising west of the Beltway 8 frontage roads, and at right you can see columns for the ramp east of those frontage roads. This ramp will allow motorists to enter and exit US 290 away from the mainlanes, improving mobility for all motorists in the area. The contractor will build an outbound US 290 Collector-Distributor ramp as well.

Project G December 2014 Pictures

In December 2014 the new Beltway 8 frontage roads opened, which include bridges over Hempstead Road and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks. Motorists no longer have to travel to Senate Avenue and the US 290 frontage road to continue on the Beltway 8 frontage road. Having a connected Beltway 8 frontage road at US 290 allows for a continuous flow of traffic, eliminates extra turn movements and relieves congestion at the US 290/Senate intersection.

Project G November 2014 Pictures

On the left crews finish up the new southbound Beltway 8 frontage road, and on the right they are shown completing work on the new northbound Beltway 8 frontage road. When finished, these roadways will allow motorists in both directions the opportunity to go over Hempstead Road and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks. Both frontage roads are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2014.

Project G October 2014 Pictures

This image shows the new continuous northbound Beltway 8 frontage road, being built over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Hempstead Road. Both this and the new continuous southbound Beltway 8 frontage road are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2014.

Project G August 2014 Pictures

These pictures show the contractor making progress on the new Beltway 8 continuous southbound frontage road, which once complete will go over Hempstead Road and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. A new continuous northbound frontage road is being built as well, and both are anticipated to open before the end of 2014.

Project G July 2014 Pictures

The picture at left shows progress the contractor has made on the new continuous northbound Beltway 8 frontage road over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks and Hempstead Road. This roadway and the new continuous southbound Beltway 8 frontage road are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2014.

At right, the picture shows construction on the inbound US 290 Collector-Distributor ramp. This ramp will allow motorists to enter and exit US 290 without disrupting mainlane traffic.

The photo at left shows the contractor finishing up the inbound US 290 frontage road, which opened between FM 529 and W. Little York in May 2014. At right is the new West Little York Bridge over US 290, which also opened in May 2014.

The picture on the left shows crews working on the new outbound US 290 frontage road just before Beltway 8.
At right, the contractor works on a column for the new northbound Beltway 8 frontage road. It will go up and over the Union Pacific railroad tracks, keeping motorists from having to use Senate Avenue as is the case today.
